The Big Screen Is the Story: Why Presentation Still Changes the Movie
IMAX, Dolby, 70mm, and the ordinary multiplex screen do not simply show the same movie differently. At their best, they change the movie itself.

A movie does not arrive in a theater as a finished experience. It arrives as a set of possibilities.
The picture can tower above an audience in the nearly square frame of IMAX 70mm, or sit within the crisp boundaries of a conventional multiplex screen. Darkness can become absolute in Dolby Cinema, swallowing the edges of the image, or remain a faint gray that reminds you where the screen begins and ends. A soundtrack can press forward from behind the actors, travel across the walls, or descend from the ceiling. Film grain can move through every face and patch of sky, while a digitally projected image can remain almost unnervingly still.
The story, performances, editing, and dialogue may be identical. The experience is not.
That distinction has become economically important as well as artistically meaningful. Enhanced formats accounted for 14.9 percent of North American ticket sales in 2025, even as overall attendance remained below its pre-pandemic level. IMAX generated a company-record $1.28 billion at the global box office that year, a 40 percent increase over 2024. By late July 2026, IMAX screenings had produced 21.9 percent of the worldwide box office for The Odyssey.
Those numbers do not prove that a premium-format screening is automatically better. They prove that audiences increasingly understand that the room matters. People are not always paying extra to see the same movie on a larger rectangle. They are paying for the possibility that the rectangle might disappear.
There Is No Neutral Screen
For most of film history, exhibition was understood as part of the filmmaking process. A release print had to be prepared, shipped, inspected, threaded, focused, framed, and projected. Curtains opened. Screen masking shifted to fit the aspect ratio. The projectionist watched for focus drift, damage, sound problems, and missed changeovers. What reached the audience depended on the work completed in the booth.
Digital distribution removed many of the most visible variables. A Digital Cinema Package can be delivered and scheduled without reels, changeover cues, or a projectionist standing beside the machine for every performance. That consistency was one of digital cinema’s major advantages. It also encouraged the assumption that presentation had become automatic.
It has not.
A projector can be dim. A lens can be slightly soft. The image can be improperly framed. The screen may lack appropriate masking. Exit signs and aisle lighting can compromise black levels. Speakers can be poorly balanced. A premium auditorium can be impressive on paper and underwhelming in practice, while a carefully maintained standard auditorium can produce an exceptionally beautiful presentation.
The projection system is only one part of the room. Screen size, seating distance, sight lines, contrast, reflected light, acoustic treatment, speaker placement, calibration, and maintenance all affect what the audience receives.
Taylor Umphenour of the Hollywood Legion Theater described the projectionist as “the last of this long chain of performers.” The phrase is useful because it restores a truth that digital exhibition can obscure: presentation is a performance. The final creative decisions may have been approved months earlier, but somebody, or some system maintained by somebody, still has to put them on the screen.

IMAX and the Grammar of Scale
Christopher Nolan has called IMAX “a portal into a level of immersion you can’t get from other formats.” The important word is not large. It is immersion.
The classic IMAX film frame runs horizontally through the camera and projector, using 15 perforations for each 70mm frame. Its image area is nearly ten times larger than a conventional four-perforation 35mm frame and roughly three times larger than standard five-perforation 70mm. At equipped theaters, it can produce the towering 1.43:1 image associated with purpose-built IMAX auditoriums.
That shape changes composition. A 1.43:1 image is not merely a wider movie with additional material added above and below. Its verticality changes where bodies sit within the frame. A figure can appear small beneath an enormous ceiling, mountain, sky, or spacecraft. A face can fill an audience’s field of vision without being cropped into a conventional widescreen strip. The floor and ceiling become expressive areas.
When an IMAX sequence expands from 2.39:1 into 1.90:1 or 1.43:1, the effect is often described as “more picture.” Technically, that is true. Dramatically, it can feel closer to a change in tense. The frame opens, the room appears to grow, and the audience’s awareness of scale changes with it.
That expansion is why IMAX can be overwhelming even when relatively little is happening. A desert does not need an explosion to feel monumental when it stretches from the lower edge of your peripheral vision toward a sky that seems to rise above the auditorium. A close-up does not need rapid editing when the smallest movement in an actor’s eyes has been enlarged to architectural scale.
IMAX sound follows the same philosophy. It is less concerned with delicate invisibility than with physical presence. The system is designed alongside the auditorium, with proprietary projection, sound, screen, and geometry treated as parts of one environment. That integration helps explain why the strongest IMAX theaters feel different before the movie even begins. The screen is not simply mounted on the far wall. It dominates the room.
But the IMAX name does not describe one uniform presentation.
At the end of 2025, IMAX reported 757 laser systems, 1,089 older digital Xenon systems, and 52 film systems in its network. The company no longer offers Xenon systems for new installations, although it continues to support the existing base. Its laser systems offer greater brightness, contrast, color range, and black levels than its earlier digital technology, while only a small number of film-equipped locations can present IMAX 70mm.
A Xenon multiplex installation, a single-projector laser auditorium, a dual-laser 1.43:1 theater, and an IMAX 70mm film presentation may all carry the same brand name at the ticket counter. They are not interchangeable.
This does not make digital IMAX illegitimate. A strong laser presentation can be exceptionally bright, sharp, stable, and immersive. Select laser-equipped theaters can also present the full 1.43:1 frame. For a digitally photographed film, or a production completed through a digital intermediate, laser projection may offer greater consistency than a film print.

The distinction matters because IMAX is both a format and a promise. The promise is immersion. The equipment, screen, and source material determine how fully that promise is kept.
Dolby Cinema and the Power of Darkness
If IMAX is built around scale, Dolby Cinema is built around separation.
A good Dolby presentation does not always announce itself through sheer size. Its effect often begins in the blacks. The frame can disappear into the surrounding room, allowing a point of light, a face, or a patch of color to emerge from what feels like genuine darkness rather than illuminated gray.
Dolby Cinema combines Dolby Vision laser projection with Dolby Atmos sound. Dolby’s established Cinema system has used dual 4K laser projection, while a next-generation Dolby Vision system announced with Christie in 2025 was designed to exceed one million to one in contrast and produce more than twice the brightness of a typical cinema presentation. Those are manufacturer specifications rather than a guarantee of what every existing Dolby auditorium produces, but they reveal the format’s priorities: deep blacks, controlled highlights, color, and dynamic range.
Contrast is not merely a technical contest over which system produces the darkest black. It determines whether visual information feels layered or flattened.
Consider a face illuminated by a dashboard at night. In a low-contrast presentation, the actor, the seat, the window, and the darkness outside can collapse into similar shades of gray. In a high-contrast presentation, the face separates from the cabin, the dashboard light retains its color, and the darkness beyond the glass becomes an active absence. The scene feels less like an image placed on a screen and more like a space containing light.
Dolby Atmos makes a similar argument through sound. Traditional surround formats assign sound to channels. Atmos allows mixers to treat sounds as individual objects that can be placed and moved through three-dimensional space, including overhead. The cinema processor then uses the auditorium’s speakers to reproduce those positions.
The obvious demonstration is a helicopter passing above the audience. The more interesting use may be quieter. Rain can exist around a conversation rather than behind it. A voice can remain anchored to a body while music expands beyond the screen. A sound behind the audience can redirect attention before the edit reveals its source.
Atmos can make action more legible, but it can also make stillness more tense. When a room has been carefully established through subtle ambient sound, the removal of that sound becomes an event. Silence acquires dimensions because the audience had previously understood the shape of the space.
This is where Dolby can transform films that do not outwardly resemble premium-format spectacles. A confined thriller, horror film, musical, or intimate drama may benefit more from precise darkness and spatial sound than from the largest possible screen. Dolby does not necessarily make the world bigger. It can make the space between two people more exact.

Standard Laser and the Format We Underestimate
The ordinary digital auditorium is often discussed as the absence of a premium format. That is a mistake.
A well-designed, properly calibrated standard laser presentation can be excellent. It may not offer the full vertical frame of IMAX or the extreme contrast associated with Dolby Cinema, but it can deliver a bright, stable, sharply focused image with consistent color across thousands of screenings.
Digital Cinema Initiatives standards call for 14 foot-lamberts of brightness at the center of the screen and a sequential contrast ratio of at least 2,000:1. Modern RGB laser projectors can substantially exceed the minimum color capabilities of traditional Xenon illumination, while laser systems can maintain their target brightness more consistently over long operating lives.
That consistency matters. Xenon lamps lose output as they age and require replacement. Laser light sources also degrade, but more gradually, and manufacturers can build in enough headroom to maintain specified brightness for tens of thousands of hours.
None of this guarantees a good screening. A theater can reduce power to extend equipment life. A screen can be dirty. A port glass can compromise the image. A poorly selected high-gain screen can produce hotspotting, where the center appears brighter than the edges, and can reduce uniformity for viewers sitting off axis.
Still, “standard” should not be treated as a synonym for disposable. Many films are composed for conventional 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 presentation and gain nothing from being enlarged into a room not designed for them. A smaller screen with correct masking, strong contrast, attentive sound, and ideal sight lines can produce a more coherent experience than a poorly maintained premium auditorium.
There are movies that ask to overwhelm us. Others ask us to look.
A conventional auditorium can be the right place to look.

35mm and the Image as an Object
The argument for 35mm projection becomes confused when it is reduced to resolution.
Film does not behave like a digital image with a fixed pixel count. Its perceived detail depends on the stock, exposure, lenses, processing, generation of the print, condition of the print, projector, screen, and viewing distance. A pristine print struck from a strong source can appear remarkably detailed. A worn print can appear soft, scratched, faded, or unstable.
The value of 35mm is not that it automatically defeats every digital projector in a specification contest. Its value is that it produces an image with a different material character.
Grain shifts from frame to frame. Highlights roll through layers of emulsion rather than terminating at a fixed digital value. Slight weave can keep the image from feeling mechanically pinned to the screen. Dust, scratches, and cue marks may reveal the print’s history, sometimes distractingly and sometimes beautifully.
Cinematographer Robert Yeoman has said that he and Wes Anderson love “the innate texture and color of the filmed image.” On Asteroid City, grain was not treated as damage to be hidden. It was part of the film’s visual language, especially in its black-and-white passages.
Darius Khondji described a similar distinction while discussing his 35mm work on Marty Supreme. Pushing the negative created “a special texture to the image that I cannot get from digital.” The point is not that digital cinematography lacks texture. It is that film’s texture begins as a physical consequence of exposure and processing, not as an effect placed over an otherwise clean image.
Projection adds another layer. A film shot on 35mm but projected digitally is not the same experience as watching a 35mm release print. The digital version can preserve grain photographed in the negative, but the projected print introduces its own density, motion, contrast, surface, and relationship to light.
That physicality changes the audience’s awareness of time. A digital file can be copied without generational wear. A film print has a life. It is manufactured, shipped, handled, repaired, cleaned, projected, and eventually retired. Every screening carries some risk. Every surviving print contains a record of previous screenings.
This can become fetishistic. A badly damaged print is not automatically more authentic than a careful restoration projected digitally. Scratches do not improve composition. Faded color does not reveal artistic intent. Film presentation is valuable when the print, equipment, and projection honor the image, not merely because celluloid is moving through the booth.
At its best, though, 35mm reminds us that movies were never entirely weightless. The image arrived in a can. It passed through human hands. Light had to travel through it before it could reach the screen.

70mm and the Return of Ceremony
The term “70mm” is often used as though it describes a single format. It does not.
Traditional large-format productions are generally photographed on 65mm negative and printed onto 70mm release stock. The additional width historically accommodated magnetic sound stripes. A conventional 70mm frame usually advances vertically at five perforations per frame and was commonly projected at approximately 2.20:1. IMAX 70mm runs horizontally at 15 perforations per frame and produces a much larger, taller image.
Both formats offer a larger image area than conventional 35mm, but they create different experiences.
Five-perforation 70mm often produces a sense of breadth. Landscapes stretch laterally. Interiors gain clarity without necessarily becoming oppressive. Faces can remain smooth and detailed inside wide compositions. Fine grain and the larger frame can give the image a combination of sharpness and softness that is difficult to describe without sounding contradictory. Details are present, but the picture does not always feel etched.
IMAX 70mm produces vertical force. Its 1.43:1 frame can make architecture, skies, and human bodies feel physically immense. The format is as capable of intimidation as beauty.
The logistics are part of the event. Every IMAX 70mm print of The Odyssey was reported to be roughly 11 miles long and about 600 pounds. Only 41 locations worldwide were presenting the film in IMAX 70mm during its initial run, and those screenings produced extraordinary per-screen grosses.
That scarcity can make the format feel ceremonial before the lights go down. Audiences travel, select specific seats, compare theaters, and buy tickets weeks or months in advance. The screening becomes an appointment rather than an interchangeable showtime.
The ceremony matters, but it should not be confused with the image itself. A 70mm print can be created from a film photographed digitally. A movie shot on 65mm can be completed through a digital intermediate. An IMAX film sequence can be projected through laser. Capture, postproduction, distribution, and exhibition are separate choices.
Each stage leaves a trace.
A digital production printed to 70mm will not suddenly acquire detail that was never recorded. It may still gain the particular contrast, color response, motion, and physical presence of film projection. Conversely, a movie photographed on large-format negative and projected digitally may preserve extraordinary photographic detail while losing the flicker, texture, and mechanical character of a release print.
“Shot on film,” “presented on film,” and “shown in a large-format auditorium” answer different questions.
The Danger of Format Absolutism
Film culture has a tendency to turn formats into teams.
IMAX is declared the only correct choice for one movie. Dolby becomes the automatic answer for another. Film projection is treated as morally superior to digital, or dismissed as nostalgia preserved by people unwilling to accept sharper and more stable technology.
These arguments mistake preference for law.
There is no universally superior format because movies do not all seek the same effect. A format is valuable when its strengths correspond to the film’s visual and sonic design.
IMAX is often the best choice when a filmmaker has composed for expanded vertical imagery, photographed with large-format cameras, or built the film around scale. Dolby Cinema can be transformative when black levels, color contrast, and spatial sound are central. A strong standard laser auditorium can be ideal for a film mastered for conventional presentation. A 35mm print can preserve the texture and historical character of a work photographed and finished photochemically. Five-perforation 70mm can bring width, detail, and ceremony without the visual extremity of IMAX.
The best presentation can also depend on the particular theater.
A pristine 35mm print shown by an experienced projectionist may be preferable to a neglected 70mm screening. A calibrated standard laser projector can outperform an aging Xenon-branded premium room. A Dolby auditorium with distracting aisle lights may sacrifice the black levels that justify the format. A giant screen viewed from a poor seat can turn immersion into neck pain.
The logo on the ticket is only the beginning of the answer.
What Theaters Owe the Audience
As premium presentation becomes more important to the theatrical business, theaters should become more precise about what they are selling.
“IMAX” is not enough. Audiences should be able to determine whether a screening uses IMAX 70mm film, a 1.43-capable laser system, another IMAX laser configuration, or an older Xenon installation. “70mm” should distinguish conventional five-perforation presentation from IMAX 15-perforation film. Standard screens should identify laser projection when it is available. Film screenings should state the gauge and, when relevant, the print source or restoration.
This information should not be hidden in enthusiast forums or seating-chart detective work. The format is part of the product.
Transparency would also discourage a simplistic premium hierarchy. Audiences could make choices based on the movie rather than the largest surcharge. Someone might choose IMAX for the expanded image, Dolby for Atmos and black levels, 70mm for the print, or a trusted independent theater because its standard projection is consistently excellent.
The industry has already accepted that presentation carries monetary value. The next step is treating it as meaningful information.
The Final Rewrite
The last stage of filmmaking does not happen in the editing room, the sound mix, or the color grade. It happens when light reaches a screen in front of an audience.
The size of that screen changes the relationship between a person and a landscape. Its shape determines what the frame can contain. Contrast decides whether darkness looks illuminated or infinite. Sound placement determines whether the audience observes a space or occupies it. Film grain can make an image feel unstable, tactile, and alive. Digital laser can make it precise, luminous, and remarkably consistent.
None of these qualities exists in isolation. They interact with the film.
That is why presentation cannot be separated from criticism. Reviewing a movie without considering how it was shown can mean ignoring part of the experience, particularly when the filmmakers have designed multiple versions around different aspect ratios, projection systems, or sound formats.
The big screen is not merely where the story is delivered.
